Betreff: [Frauen-inform] 2 Open Positions in CRC on "Constructing Explainability"

Open Positions
We offer 2 full time positions for a PhD candidate in computer science or with similar background in the area of human-agent interaction in the context of explaining AI decisions.
1. PhD Position “A03 - Co-constructing Explanations with Emotional Alignment”
In this project psychologists and computer scientists work together to investigate the influence of emotions on processes of understanding of explanations for the support of risk decisions. The goal of the open position is the development, implementation and evaluation of an emotion model that recognizes the cognitive and emotional state of the explainee (i.e. the human who receives an explanation) and adapts its interaction strategies to minimize emotional bias in a dialogical interaction with a virtual agent.
2. PhD Position “A05- Attention modeling in Explanatory dialog”
In this project linguists, psychologists and computer scientists work together to investigate the interplay of verbal strategies (especially negation) and the distribution of attention in dialogs explaining visual tasks. The task of the open position is the development, implementation and evaluation of an attention model together with a multi-modal dialog component controlling the explanatory interaction of a virtual robot head.

The positions are part of the Collaborative Research Center on „Constructing Explainability“, which is carried out jointly by the universities of Paderborn and Bielefeld, Germany, and investigates how algorithmic transparency can be fostered, in particular in the context of black-box models as used in state-of-the-art artificial intelligence systems. The central hypothesis of the research center is that explanations are most efficient if they are constructed jointly (co-constructed) by the explainer and the explainee. The mechanisms of this co-construction within multimodal interaction and their embedding into a societal macro-context will be investigated by a consortium of computer scientists, psychologists, linguists and social scientists, in order to lay the foundations for transparency and thus for the sovereign and informed decision making by humans in their interaction with intelligent systems.
