The Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) is a non-university research institute
under public law of the state of Berlin. ZIB conducts research and
development in the field of information technology, applied mathematics
and computer science focusing on modeling, simulation and optimization
with scientific cooperation partners from academia and industry.



The division Mathematics for Life and Materials Sciences is offering
within the BMBF funded project BIOPASS a


Research position – PhD Student (f/m)
Pay grade E 13 TV-L Berlin (100%)
Reference code: WA 18/15

 The position will be under a fixed-term contract for two years with the
option to be extended.



Research Topic

Within the project BIOPASS (Image-, ontology-, and process-based
assistance for minimally invasive endoscopic surgery), a novel
marker-free navigation for endoscopes in minimally invasive surgery is
to be developed. Together with clinical domain experts, research groups
at Leizpig university, and companies, concepts, data structures, and
efficient algorithms are to be developed that allow a match between
image features of newly acquired and stored endoscopic image sequences.
In combination with process information and dedicated ontologies
positional hints are to be provided and visualized graphically within an
anatomical reference model.The work will be supported by a student
assistant with 60 hours per month.

 Requirements

·            Above average university degree in computer science

·            Excellent knowledge in medical image processing, pattern
analysis, and machine learning

·            Strong interest in application oriented research &
development within the area of computer-assisted medicine

·            Strong interest in visualization and computer graphics

·            Profound knowledge in object oriented software development
as well as programming skills in C++

·            Ability to work independently and goal-oriented on the
research topic as well as in a large interdisciplinary team

·            Good communication skills in English
