The Technische Universität München (TUM) and the Alexander von Humboldt
Foundation support the expansion of the Energy Informatics research group.
The research group forms part of the recently created chair of Application
and Middleware Systems located at TUM’s Department of Computer Science.

Energy Informatics (EI) is a new interdisciplinary research area within the
computer science / information systems community that investigates
information age approaches to managing energy in a sustainable way. This
includes the design and evaluation of system components (algorithms, data
structures, interfaces, etc.) that allow for controlling the generation,
transport, and consumption of energy to reach two goals: reducing the
overall energy consumption and integrating more renewable energy sources
with variable output into the electricity grid. The research interests of
the EI group range from modeling/simulation of sustainable energy systems to
advanced optimization techniques including machine learning based methods
for monitoring and controlling loads and energy storage in smart grids. We
are looking for highly motivated graduate students who would like to pursue
doctoral research in this area.

Requirements for candidates:

· High academic qualification, in particular a Master’s degree in
computer science, information systems, electrical engineering, industrial
engineering, mathematics, or related fields with very good overall grades

· Interest in energy management, smart grids, renewable energy, power
system control, electricity markets, green computing, etc.

· Research experience in the area of data management, distributed
systems, optimization, stochastic modeling and simulation (a background in
energy management and power systems is a plus)

· Excellent programming skills in at least one common purpose
programming language (e.g., Java, C++, Python, etc.)

· Knowledge of databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, HBase, etc.)

· Knowledge of scientific software tools (e.g., R, Matlab, CPLEX,
Gurobi, etc.)

· Interest in contributing to undergraduate and graduate-level
teaching and supervision of Bachelors’ and Masters’ theses in the above
listed fields

· Very high proficiency in English (German language skills is a plus)

· Very good English writing skills

· Committed, self-motivated, self-driven, and proactive team player
with good communication and interpersonal skills

Position:

· Time-limited doctoral positions

· Young and dynamic team at one of the leading universities in
Germany

· Participation in research projects with international partners and
industry worldwide
