Ph.D. & Post-doctoral Positions in Middleware, Data Management,
Distributed Systems, and Enterprise Computing

The Technische Universität München (TUM) and the Alexander von Humboldt
Foundation are sponsoring the creation

of a new research center with focus on application-oriented systems,
distributed systems, middleware, and event processing.

The research center is located at the Department of Computer Science at
TUM.

The center’s research focuses on the development of middleware and data
management abstractions to support distributed

information systems, enterprise computing systems, and ultra-large-scale
systems.

The research center offers opportunities for doctoral candidates,
post-doctoral fellows and research associates under a wide

variety of research themes, including, but not limited to one of the
following:

• Matching algorithms for high-dimensional data with
applications to computational advertising

• Web data platforms, cloud architectures and big data
(e.g., transaction processing and view maintenance)

• Algorithms for the determination of root cause of failures
in large-scale enterprise systems

• Flexible business processes management architectures and
business entities

• Smart power grid information technology, green middleware,
& energy-aware computing (e.g., middleware for the

monitoring and control of power grids)

• Hardware-software co-design based on FPGAs to accelerate
event and event stream processing with applications in finance,

business analytics, and system management

Requirements for candidates:

• For all applications, high academic standing and Master’s
degree in computer science, information systems, electrical engineering,

or related fields

• In addition, for post-doctoral candidate applicants,
completion of doctorate with outstanding and proven research track
record in

one of the above listed fields

• In addition, for research associate applicants, proven
track record in managing research projects

• Prior exposure to and experience in research on middleware
systems, event processing, data management, business process

management, or distributed systems

• Interest in design and development of software systems,
excellent programming skills in standard programming languages, and

experience in systems and network programming

• Experience with large software development projects and
software development tools

• Interest in contributing to undergraduate and
graduate-level teaching and supervision of Bachelors’ and Masters’
theses in the above

listed fields

• Exceptional proficiency in English (knowledge of the
German language is not required)

• Committed, self-motivated, self-driven, and proactive team
player with good communication and interpersonal skills

Position:

• Remuneration and conditions of employment following the
German TV-L (full-time) pay scale

• Time-limited Ph.D., post-doctoral and research associate
positions

• Young and dynamic team at one of the leading universities
in Germany

• Participation in research projects with international
partners and industry worldwide

Candidates will work at the Technische Universität München (TUM),
Department of Computer Science. Positions are time-limited with extensions

depending on satisfactory research progress based on periodic
performance reviews. TUM is an equal opportunity employer.

Application Details & Contact:

The next round of selection interviews is planned for early June. To
participate in this round, applicants should submit a full curriculum
vitae,

list of publications, transcripts of B.Sc. and Master’s studies, and a
short statement of research as one single PDF file to
sekretariati13 at in.tum.de <mailto:sekretariati13 at in.tum.de>

by no later than May 31st, 2012. Applications received after this date
may be considered for future selection interviews until positions are
