Berlin
8 Open Access Conference (Berlin 8), jointly hosted by Chinese Academy of
Sciences, China, and Max Planck Society, Germany, will be held in October
25-27, 2010, in Beijing, China. 

 

In
today’s world, access to information is a critical factor for the survival,
development, and competition for institutions, communities, and citizens. Open
access to information becomes a major means to ensure the widest distribution
of information and public rights of access to knowledge. As the newest one of
the Berlin Open Access Conferences, Berlin
8 aims to share and explore
the strategies, policies, implementation approaches, supporting mechanisms, and
international collaborative efforts, for open access, by governmental and
funding agencies, research and educational institutions, scholarly
communications agencies, libraries, and open access researchers and
practitioners, among others.

 

As the first Berlin Open Access Conference to be held
outside the European continent, Berlin 8 hopes
to attract the newcomers of open access in emerging and developing countries, as
well as veterans of open access from Europe, North America,
and other countries. 

 

1. Themes

The main theme of Berlin
8 is: 

Berlin Declaration: Implementation Progress,
Best Practices, and Future Challenges. 

The following sub-themes are suggested but not limited
to:

Trends in international scholarly
communications and open access

Strategies and policies of funding agencies

OA strategies, policies, and implementations at R&D
institutions

Open Data, Open Educational Resources, and Open Science

Current Research on Open Access, including legal issues,
economy, impact, user participations, and others

Administrative and operational issues in implementing OA

Supporting mechanisms for sustainable OA

OA in developing countries and in the world

 

2. Registration

Berlin 8 welcomes all those interested in
open access to participate. You can register at Berlin 8 Conference website http://www.berlin8.org. 

 

Regular registration fee for international participants
would be 300 euros, and the early-bird registration before August 20 is 240
euros. The registration fee will cover the conference sessions and a free
access to post-conferences sessions, lunches for Oct. 25-27, the reception, and
one local cultural visit on Oct. 27,2010. 

 

3.
Presentations

Formal presentations on the themes and other closely
related topics are welcomed. We are inviting speakers from governmental and
funding agencies, research and educational institutions, scholarly
communications agencies, libraries, and open access researchers and
practitioners. At the same time, we welcome proposals for presentations from
all interested.

 

Deadlines: 

June 15: Proposals
for presentations due.

July 15: Acceptance of presentations due.

August 15: Abstract of presentations due.

September 30: Full presentations (in full-text or in
power-point presentation) due.

Posters will be invited to be displayed during the conference
